Throwback: This Jumbo Red Pikmin might be my new favorite collectible from the franchise

I have collected several massive gaming plushes that take up way too much room to keep in my house. Has it become a bit out of control and obsessive? Absolutely. But when someone hands me a life-size Morgana from Persona 5 or a Kirby so big you could practically use him as a chair, how could I not want more? Everyone who has one of these colossal plushes knows that they are extremely comfy to hold and the true stamp of being a fan of a franchise.

Despite Pikmin canonically being a little over an inch in height, Nintendo once partnered with Japanese toy company Oike to release jumbo plushes. And after years of searching for one in great condition, I finally managed to acquire one from ZenMarket.

For context, Oike’s jumbo Pikmin plushes were released exclusively in Japan a year after the launch of Pikmin for Nintendo GameCube. Depending on how you look at the size (stem up or down), all three plushes are roughly 130 centimeters tall.

There were 3 plushes part of this jumbo plush set; a Red Pikmin with a bud, a Blue Pikmin with a leaf, and a Yellow Pikmin with a flower. Being released in 2002, these plushes are, of course, based on the renderings from the first game.

Over the years, a complete set of these plushes has become a holy grail of Pikmin collectors. When they do show up on auction sites, they typically go from anywhere between $400 to over $1,000. Condition and tag are always factored in, but even in rough condition, these guys still will turn into an item trapped in a bidding war. This being the only time Nintendo ever made jumbo Pikmin plushes will certainly keep their value on the high end. It’s also completely unknown as to how many of these plushes were produced!
